The review
Show It Better, the YouTube channel on communicating architecture visually, goes through What is Small-Scale Architecture?, from the interviews to the competition designs.
A review by Show It Better, on Buildner’s YouTube channel.
In their words
Every ARCHHIVE book asks one question. Ben van Berkel and Kengo Kuma answer two of them.
Ben van BerkelFounder and principal architect, UNStudio, Amsterdam. What is Small-Scale Architecture?“Small scale projects sometimes generate ideas which can later be extended to larger scale projects. They not only perform as a testing ground for geometric, material and construction related considerations, but they are also invaluable when testing ideas on a conceptual level. Or better said, how to combine the two.”
Kengo KumaFounder, Kengo Kuma & Associates, Tokyo. What is Affordable Housing?“In our current era, it’s imperative to reevaluate and alter our understanding of ‘living’ within a home. The key aspect of this evolution is ensuring that all housing we envision and bring to life must be accessible in terms of affordability.”

Buildner Books / Legal
How buying a book from us works: who sells it, how an order and payment work, delivery and PDF downloads, the 14 days you have to return printed books, and your rights.
Buildner Books, the bookshop at architecturebooks.bnr.ac (the Shop), is run by SIA “BN Publishing” (we, us, the Seller), a company registered in the Republic of Latvia:
SIA “BN Publishing”
Registration number 40203252333, VAT number LV40203252333
Blaumaņa iela 11/13 - 20A, Rīga, LV-1011, Republic of Latvia
Email books@buildner.com
You (the Buyer) are the person who places an order in the Shop. To order, you must be at least 18 years old.
The Goods are the printed books and the PDF editions (e-books and digital magazines) sold in the Shop. A PDF is a book or magazine supplied as a file to download.
The Agreement is the purchase-sale agreement between you and us for an order. These terms (the Terms) are part of it.
How we handle personal data is explained in our Privacy Policy.
You accept the Terms when you tick the box at checkout and pay. The version of the Terms on this page on the day you order applies to that order.
We may change the Terms, for example when the law or the Shop changes. A change never affects an order already placed.
The Shop is available in several languages. The Agreement is concluded in the language of the Shop in which you place your order.
We keep a record of every order: what was bought, the price, and the wording of the boxes you ticked at checkout. The order confirmation we email you is your copy.
Nothing in the Terms limits your rights as a consumer under the laws of the Republic of Latvia and the European Union.
You don’t need an account: every order is a guest order.
An order takes four steps:
Until you pay, you can change your bag at any time: add or remove books, and change editions and quantities. From Stripe’s page you can go back to the Shop without paying.
The Agreement is made when your payment is confirmed. We then email you an order confirmation with the order number, what you bought, the price, the boxes you ticked and, for PDFs, the download links. We keep a record of the boxes you ticked, with the date and time and the IP address they were sent from (Privacy Policy).
Please check that your email address and delivery address are correct. We are not responsible for a delivery that fails because of a wrong address given at checkout.
If we can’t supply what you ordered, or a price in the Shop is plainly wrong, we tell you by email and refund you in full within 14 days.
Prices are in euros (EUR) and include VAT. Delivery of printed books is free (clause 5.1).
You pay the full price when you order. Payment is handled by Stripe on its secure payment page, with the payment methods shown there. We never see or keep your card details.
Stripe may offer to show the price in your own currency. The amount and the exchange rate are then shown on its page before you pay.
Stripe emails you the receipt for your payment.
You pay the price shown when you order. Prices may change, but never for an order already placed.
Prices depend on where you shop from: the European Union, the USA or the rest of the world. We work out your country from your IP address (Privacy Policy) and show that region’s prices, which are the same in every EU country. The price on the checkout page and on Stripe’s payment page is the price you pay.
We ship printed books free of charge to every country offered at checkout.
Delivery usually takes 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the destination. We deliver within 30 days of your order at the latest.
When your books are on their way, we email you the carrier and the tracking number (when the service gives one).
Outside the European Union, the destination country may charge import duties, taxes or handling fees on arrival. They are not part of our prices and are paid by you.
The books are at your risk from the moment you, or a person you name who is not the carrier, receive them.
If a parcel has not arrived 30 days after your order, or arrives damaged, write to books@buildner.com (with photos of any damage). We send the books again or refund you, as you prefer.
If a parcel comes back to us because the address was wrong or it was not collected, we write to you and agree whether to send it again (you pay the new postage) or to refund you the price of the books.
PDFs are sent by email: the order confirmation, sent as soon as your payment is confirmed and within 1 day at the latest, has a Download PDF link for each one.
Each link works for 30 days and for 10 downloads. Save the file on your device. If a link has run out or you can’t find the email, write to books@buildner.com and we send you new links.
The file comes from our download page, which may pass you on to WeTransfer, the file service we use. The PDF opens in any PDF reader on a computer, tablet or phone.
A PDF is for your own personal use. You may keep it on your devices and print it for yourself. You may not share, send, sell, lend, rent, upload or otherwise make it available to others, or remove the notices of its authors and publisher.
The books, texts, images and designs are protected by copyright and belong to us or to their authors. Buying a book or a PDF gives you no other rights to them.
Printed books: you can withdraw from the Agreement, without giving a reason, within 14 days of the day you, or a person you name who is not the carrier, receive the books. When the books of one order arrive in more than one parcel, the 14 days start when the last parcel arrives.
To withdraw, tell us before the 14 days end, in one of these ways:
You have withdrawn in time if you send your statement before the 14 days end.
Send the books back within 14 days of withdrawing, to our returns address:
SIA “PP Projects”, registration number 42103091699
Alandes iela 29, Grobiņa, LV-3430, Republic of Latvia
You pay the cost of sending the books back.
We refund what you paid for the books you return within 14 days of receiving your withdrawal, to the payment method you used and at no cost to you. We may hold back the refund until the books are back with us or you have sent us proof that you posted them, whichever comes first.
Please pack the books well. You may look through a book as you would in a bookshop. If a returned book is damaged, written in or worn by more than that, we may take the loss of its value off the refund.
PDFs: a PDF is digital content supplied online, not on a physical medium. If your bag holds a PDF, the checkout asks you to tick a second box: you ask for the download links of your PDFs to be sent straight away, and you understand that once they are sent you lose your right to withdraw from buying the PDFs. The links are in the order confirmation, which also repeats what you agreed to. From then on you can’t withdraw from buying the PDFs (Cabinet of Ministers Regulation No. 255, Regulations Regarding Distance Contracts, point 22.13).
Print + PDF: you can return the printed book as in clause 7.1. The PDF stays yours, so we refund the printed book’s share of the edition’s price, in proportion to the prices of the printed and PDF editions on their own. For example, if a hardcover costs €55 on its own, its PDF €30 and Print + PDF €65, a returned hardcover is refunded €65 × 55 / 85 = €42.06.
Faulty or wrong books: if a book arrives faulty or damaged, or is not what you ordered, the legal guarantee applies. We replace the book or, if that isn’t possible, refund you, and we pay the postage. The same goes for a PDF that doesn’t open or is incomplete: we send you a working file. Write to books@buildner.com with your order number, and a photo if you can. The legal guarantee covers faults that show within two years of delivery.
We are responsible for supplying the Goods as they are described in the Shop.
We are not responsible for a delay or failure caused by events outside our reasonable control, such as strikes, natural disasters or a disruption of postal services. If this happens, we tell you, and if the delay is long you may cancel the order for a full refund.
Nothing in the Terms limits our responsibility where the law does not allow it to be limited.
We send order information to the email address given at checkout: the order confirmation with any PDF links, and an email when printed books are on their way. Stripe sends the payment receipt.
If an email from us doesn’t arrive within a few minutes, please check your spam folder, or write to us.
You can reach us at books@buildner.com, or by post at our address in clause 1.1.
The Agreement is governed by the laws of the Republic of Latvia. If you live in another EU country, you also keep the protection of that country’s consumer laws that can’t be set aside by agreement.
If something goes wrong, please write to us first. We answer a written complaint within 15 days.
If we can’t settle it together, you can turn to the Consumer Rights Protection Centre of Latvia (Patērētāju tiesību aizsardzības centrs, PTAC), whose Consumer Dispute Resolution Commission settles disputes out of court:
Talejas iela 1, Rīga, LV-1026, Republic of Latvia
Phone +371 65452554, email pasts@ptac.gov.lv, www.ptac.gov.lv
If you live in another EU country, the European Consumer Centre of your country can help with a complaint about a purchase from us. You can also go to court as the law allows.
Fill in and send this form only if you want to withdraw from the Agreement. The quickest way is Withdraw from contract.
